Contraception Q&A

What is contraception?

Contraception, also known as birth control, is a method or device used to prevent pregnancy. These methods are designed to interfere with the normal process of ovulation, fertilization, or implantation.

Contraception allows individuals to plan and space their pregnancies, contributing to better health outcomes for both mothers and children.

What are my contraception options?

There are various contraception options available, categorized broadly into short-acting, long-acting, and permanent methods.

Short-acting methods include:

  • Oral contraceptives (called “the pill”): taken daily to prevent ovulation
  • Contraceptive patch: worn on the skin and replaced weekly
  • Vaginal ring: inserted into the vagina and replaced monthly
  • Contraceptive injections: administered every three months to prevent ovulation

Long-acting methods include:

  • Intrauterine devices (IUDs): T-shaped devices inserted into the uterus. There are hormonal IUDs, which release progestin, and copper IUDs, which don’t contain hormones and can last up to 10 years.
  • Nexplanon®: a small, flexible rod inserted under the skin of the upper arm, releasing hormones to prevent pregnancy for up to three years

Permanent methods (sterilization) include:

  • Tubal ligation: a surgical procedure where the fallopian tubes are cut, tied, or sealed to prevent eggs from reaching the uterus
  • Vasectomy: a surgical procedure for men where the vas deferens is cut and sealed to prevent sperm from entering the semen

If you’re unsure about the best option for you, meet with your provider to discuss your desires and goals. They also learn more about your health history to help you make the most comfortable decision.

Is contraception safe?

Contraception is generally safe when used correctly and under the guidance of your health care provider. Each method comes with its own set of benefits and potential risks. Discuss your health history and lifestyle with your provider to get the answers you need.
