Pelvic Pain Q&A

When should I seek care for my pelvic pain?

Pelvic pain is something most women experience now and then. It's especially common during your period, during pregnancy, and after giving birth.

Pelvic pain is also a sign that you may have a more serious health condition. If your pain is severe enough to keep you home from school or work, it's best to notify your OB/GYN. Keep an eye out for pelvic pain that's accompanied by the following symptoms:

  • Abnormal bleeding
  • Abdominal swelling
  • Foul-smelling discharge
  • Pain while urinating
  • Painful bowel movements
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Difficulty becoming pregnant

Some pelvic pain during pregnancy is normal, but sudden or worsening pelvic pain is a sign that you need medical help. Seek medical care right away if you experience any unexplained pain during your pregnancy.

What causes pelvic pain?

Pelvic pain is linked to many different gynecological conditions. Many cases of pelvic pain are caused by problems with your uterus, ovaries, or Fallopian tubes. Problems along the urinary tract can also cause pelvic pain.

Health conditions that cause pelvic pain include:

  • Uterine fibroids
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
  • Endometriosis
  • Ovarian cysts
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease
  • Urinary tract infection (UTI)
  • Bladder infection
  • Irritable bowel syndrome

If you’re pregnant, pelvic pain is often a sign that labor is beginning. Call the office for advice if you experience pelvic pain during the last few weeks of your pregnancy.

How is pelvic pain diagnosed?

Before treatment can begin, it's important to determine what's causing your pain. During your consultation, your provider performs a pelvic exam to check for swollen tissue or tumors.

She may also suggest a Pap smear or STD test to screen for certain diseases. Imaging tests also help the Grapevine Women's Health and Gynecology, LLC team get a clear picture of your pelvic organs.

How is pelvic pain treated?

Once your provider knows what's causing your pain, they create your individualized treatment plan, looking into various methodologies, including hormonal and all-natural remedies.

In some cases, acupuncture or changes in diet may help relieve your symptoms. The Grapevine Women's Health and Gynecology, LLC team may suggest taking vitamin B-1 or magnesium for pain relief. Lifestyle changes, such as regular exercise and improving posture, may also prove effective.
